Connection in Tango

Connection in tango describes various aspects of the interaction between dance partners. Miles Vanlife identifies seven possible definitions for the term:

  1. **Communication**: The kinesthetic, physiological, or emotional exchange between partners.
  2. **Emotional Response**: Feelings generated by a partner's embrace or movement.
  3. **Kinesthetic Sensation**: Physical synchronization of movements, separate from emotions or music.
  4. **Technical Function**: How a step or figure works due to understanding or misunderstanding the interaction.
  5. **Musical Interpretation**: How a dancer connects with the music during the dance.
  6. **Physical Contact**: The hand-in-hand or torso-on-torso contact and tactile pressures.
  7. **Movement Synchronization**: The kinesthetic sensation of matching movements with the music, not necessarily the partner's body.

Methodology for Clarity

To achieve clarity in discussing connection, use specific feedback:

- **Positive Example**: "I enjoyed the embrace you are using. It felt safe and conversational. I was free to move and didn’t feel rushed." - **Negative Example**: "I didn’t feel safe with your choices and felt rushed." - **Musical Execution**: "I felt that your execution of the music in time to vocabulary was excellent and on par with what the music was asking for."

By being specific, dancers can provide clear and constructive feedback.
